Nature Group Travels To Seymour, IN to Chase Sandhill Cranes

Submitted by Julie Barrick

The Nature Group traveled to Seymour, Indiana last Friday, Feb 15th, to look for Sandhill Cranes. We were not disappointed, we saw thousands of them. They were on the ground, in the air, best of all some were doing their mating dance!

They were in an area called Ewing Flats. It was a little tricky getting to the Cranes because many of the roads were still flooded. We were hoping to see a Whooping Crane  that had been seen in previous days, and we believe we saw a small group at a distance, but we couldn’t access them due to high water.

We were treated to seeing a juvenile Bald Eagle flying around, then landing with lunch in his mouth. Sadly, it was a Sandhill Crane that he was lunching on, but it made for some cool photos!

We ended the day at the Muscatatuck  National Wildlife Area. They have a 4 mile auto trail that we took. We saw some Canada Geese and Bluebirds. They say the Wood Ducks are starting to arrive for the spring season.

I think we would all highly recommend this area if you are wanting to see Sandhill Cranes. However, they will be leaving very soon to head back north. So if you want to go, go in the next few days. It’s worth a trip up there!

It was great getting share this experience with Sheila and Alan Reeves, Rita and Bill Schneider, MaryBeth Carlisle and Jan Trabue.

We all had a great time. Julie learned about this place from one of the attendees at the Macro Workshop. Way to network, Julie!
